Pond Boss Forums POND CONSTRUCTION Creating habitat extra rock-should I use?

I've got a 1 year old 1 acre pond, 8-10 ft at deepest. Stocked w/ CNBG and FHM last Fall, Fingerling LMB coming in June! I've got several tons of flat 6-8" river rocks left over from landscaping. Also have a couple tons of 4-6" rip-rap. Any reason to throw this in my pond? If so, should I make flat beds or mounds? Would it create crawfish habitat? Or just save it for another project? What would you do? Thanks!

If you are looking to get rid of the rock I would think it adding it to the pond would be a good idea. Others will chime in regarding beds or mounds. I recently put two pickup truck beds full of rocks in my pond. The reason I added it was because under my inlet pipe I was getting some erosion where the water runs in. Adding the rocks helped to minimize that and it looks nice too. Lots of uses for rock in a pond in my opinion.

I would use it on the dam and sides of the pond that experience the most wave action from the wind.

It will definitely provide crawfish and fish habitat. I would try to get the rock and crawfish in the pond before you get your LMB!

I Agree with rock at the bank. Start putting rock along the bank about 1 foot up the bank from the full pool waterline and work your way into the water. A couple feet into the water will make a big difference with erosion and plant density. 4 feet into the water would be better. It's also a good idea to run some piles down further into the water, especially if your water level fluctuates more than you'd like. This wil help maintain some rocky habitate during low level times.
