For quite a few years I have just about had the market cornered on hogs. The create a heckuva mess and the kids have been unsuccessfully hunting them. Last weekend I took a 4wheeler ride through my place and didn't even find a track. So, I went onto a neighbors place. Also, not even a track. They will be back.

Do they have a home territory, or just wander about searching for food?

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

I've read and seen several reports on the Hog problem in Texas. One reoccurring fact I have seen is it takes an annual kill of 800,000 (that's right, 800 thousand) hogs just to keep the population EVEN each year.

That's what I call a 'target rich environment'!!!! ; )

What do they do with 800,000 dead hogs? Do they render into something? Make dog food?

remember the current lead strategy for controlling lionfish and asian carp is to try to find a way to get people to eat them, or create some other commercial market for them.

It seems there would be a good use for that much meat!

I think the USDA won't let the meat be used commercially; they are not grown on inspected farms.

Hmm, invasive lionfish and and asian carp are they inspected, do they go from 'wild to table'?

I imagine taste of feral hogs for human consumption would be a barrier. But perhaps as a supplemental protein source? Could possibly make into a new type of fish food... we could call it..

I think fish and mammals have different inspection standards; fish don't carry many diseases transmissible to humans compared to mammals. 800,000 hogs isn't that many compared to a large commercial hog corporation's production.

Jeff, they are about 99% nocturnal so target rich is kinda hard to come by. I shot 3 of them this year under corn feeders during deer season. A kid shot one big sow. I've tried to trap them with just about every kind of bait but have never caught one in my box traps. I don't allow coyote hunting because I consider them as being on my side.

I've had them for about 15 or so years and they've never left before. You haven't really lived until you walk into a big bunch of them at night. That can be a change your underwear type of experience.

My Grandson and another 18 year old predator went up last week and baited what had been a small seasonal pond. Hogs didn't show but rooted around the house that night. They have really enjoyed the grass on my dam.

Pat, I'll keep your generous offer in mind but I figure they will be back.

Not sure where the 800K number came from, but that seems way low to me.

And as far as what to do with them, eat some, feed some to the coyotes, buzzards, eagles.....

Everyone asks why I don't butcher them anymore. I tell them they are welcome too. I can only eat so much pork, and commercial pork is so cheap and the hams are so big and sweet!

I started out skinning them out. That got old fast and the freezer got full just as fast. Then I started plucking hams/shoulders with a DeWalt saws-all - talk about fast! smile

Now, they are good Coyote and cow chasing, chicken killing, goose egg robbing dog bait.

The hogs are back. Sid, on the rare occasions when I shoot one, I drag it off for the clean up crew.
