What about Hybrid Striped Bass? We bought and stocked a bunch; but have yet to ever catch one (in pond or otherwise). Look forward to someday...

I will post an update on my Magnolia Crappie experiment soon. I witnessed them slashing at my GSH and FHM feeding on pellets the other day - they looked to be at least 7" by now. Stocked them in October 2009 at 2-4", so I'm happy with their growth during the cool seasons.

Good call Jeff...one of my favorite fish I completely forgot to mention. Updating at 4:00 AM will play lots of tricks on the brain.

I can't wait to see how the hybrid crappies do. I think their growth will be impressive. The big question will be the spawning and related issues.

Could probably break it down by "genre" of fish:
Walleye/Saugeye/Yellow Perch Musky/Northern Pike/Pickerel Trout/Salmon Hybrid Striped Bass/Striped Bass/White Bass Rough fish (carp/gar)
Ponds in TX, lake place in WI, me in CA

The catfish people will be upset because catfish/bullhead types have not been mentioned, unless one considers them a "rough" fish.

It's a hybrid between a black and white crappie. Some pond owners are experimenting with them to see if they may be easier to manage.

The pond owners that have reported using the hybrid black Crappie have been unable to maintain the populations and need restocking about every 5 years depending on the numbers of original stockers being removed. This was the hope and goal for the HBC. The offspring are still high in numbers but are far inferior to the F1 (first generation) fish and are provig to be easily controlled by apex predators.
This helps alleviate the fears of a boom spawn overpopulating a pond with crappie and stunting all the fish.

TJ, do you have actual Magnolia(triploid) hybrid crappie, or just black/white cross? I thought the Magnolia was produced only for stocking into N. Miss. reservoirs by their hatchery at Enid reservoir, and is done by exposing the eggs to high pressure or temp. Maybe I'm confused.

So are you saying the black crappie should not overtake a pond then?
Also if someone was to add both black and white crappie to a pond, could they end up with a hybrid or is this strictly a man made fish?

MRHELLO,
No, I'm not saying Black Crappie won't take over a pond. Just the opposite, Black or White Crappie in small ponds are virtually certain to overpopulate in a pond without VERY intensive management. When and how long it may take is the question. I'm sure a few Hybrids would occur if a pond were stocked with both Black and White Crappie, but not many. Plus having both Crappie species in a small pond would scare the crud out of most pond owners.
The Hybrid is only produced at one location as far as I know, J M Malone's in Lonoke, Arkansas.

ok once a fish is stunted is this permenant or could it be fixed if moved to either a larger BOW or more forage?
Just wondering how long it takes to stunt fish, if it can be changed, or if there are fish that eat the stunted ones.
We have a friend who is loaded with 8-10 bass. Will these ever get larger, or is there anything we can stock to get their numbers down.
Thanks

Do a forum search for stunted fish. There is a plethora of information on here about the causes and the solutions and what the expected outcome should be.

Has anyone heard of stocking Fresh Water Drum in a pond?
What are the pros or cons?
Would they be a good forage base?

Never heard of nor do I know of any fish hatcheries that sell them. The only source would be from the wild. I suspect they would be somewhat like CC in a pond but probably less predatory. Large numbers could lead to increased turbidity as would be the case with large numbers of CC. They do have the ability to feed on mollusks, ones much larger than RES. I suspect their ability to naturally reproduce would be limited in most ponds because of how they reproduce. For this reason, they would probably make a pour forage as they wouldn't reproduce. If they did reproduce, they probably would make an excellent forage. In BOW's with drum in them, drum often make up a decent proportion of game fish's diets.

Travis, are you saying drum will likely not spawn or that their young will not likely survive due to predation on the eggs? Are you familiar with what they require to spawn?
