Can anyone in MI or nearby states report on RES spawn date? I have never witnessed RES spawn beds in my pond and assumed they were in the deeper water just below my visibility limits. I did have YOY RES in traps last spring and again this spring. But if I have 2" RES in traps this spring and RES haven't spawned yet this year??

I went out at last night last week and saw 2 spawning rings in a place where the gravel was fanned clean of sand. I saw a fish on the bed then it darted away so I couldn't see it well. It was dark and flashlight doesn't illuminate very well.

There is only one place where i have a layer of gravel, and even though it was covered with silt, they found that one spot in the whole pond that had a rocky bottom and something made a nest there.

the RES and LES are the only panfish in the pond, GSH, scatter eggs, Perch are already done laying egg ribbons, so I have to believe they are RES/LES nests... so maybe we will have more RES babies soon?

Others see RES beds already?

Our redears moved up on beds about 2 weeks ago. Still saw a few on beds the other day on my walk. I would suspect most will have dropped their eggs by this weekend though with the increasing temps. I love watching them on their beds, cool fish and damn protective of their beds.
Geographically, I'm south of Chicago about 45 miles.

Thanks for the reply WaterFowl. How deep would you say their beds are? Are they BG or RES? What bottom features do they choose for their beds, like rocky, slope, sand etc.

Finally, do you get to see them during the day? I can't seem to sneak up on them in the day.

But... I do have a bloom going now so visibility is tough.

Appreciate the reply

Our res are nesting right now, have been for a couple weeks now. They are in about 16" of water, using a gravel bed as nesting sites.

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

I thought ours would be done a month ago but this full moon has the GSF out in shallow water along with an occasional RES near the bank in the main pond. I see a few BG out a little deeper but the water clarity is not such that I can not see anything deeper than about 18".

In my forage pond I can see one 6" RES on a bed in 9" deep water then about 5 4" little guys protecting beds in only 6" deep water. One of the nests is no bigger than 6" in diameter.

What I do not know is if the larger RES are out on beds deeper. I would have thought they would have been done by now so not sure if this is a main spawn or just a secondary one with the late bloomers and the main spawn already being over.

I wonder if spawn timings are later here in MI since weather was cool this spring? I didn't see the circles in the rocky area till last week. It is about 20" of water I would say. It is interesting that they picked what appears to be only one spot to make the nest and 4-5 nests are clustered right next to each other.

It is in the shaded side of the pond (SW corner under tree shade) and the opposite side from where I always hand feed the fish.

It seemed like memorial day snuck up on us and everyone here is frantic to get their gardens put in. We have 90 plus degrees for the next 4 days so the heat wave is on... Time to switch aeration to night time only and cool the water back down.

Our redears are spawning anywhere from 16" to 3' deep of water on our lake. A rock&sand and substrate seems to be preferred. While most of our beds are in relatively shallow flat bottom I have noticed a few deeper beds where small rock is readily present. They are not shy on our body of water leading up to and during the spawn. It was such a slow warmup this year our lake stayed cleared longer than it usually does though (I'm still waiting on our bloom). I walked around yesterday afternoon and it is evident on our body of water the vast majority of the panfish are done spawning now.
We first introduced redears into out lake in 2013. It was not until last year that we noticed respectable #'s of spawning fish on beds. We now have a sustainable population of redears. They have actually taken over some of the best past bluegill spawning grounds.

A little video from the redears spawning this year is below:
Redear Spawning 2017

Quite a few small gills in the pic but you will see the redears flash. There are 4 of them in that center area.

Wow Waterfowl! What a cool video!
Are those RES? They look big and stocky like HBG or BG? You must feed those RES well.

What are all the fish hovering in the shallows above the beds doing? One looks trapped in the algae, what are they waiting for? I assume the males are circling over the eggs right on the nests?

That was really cool and glad you came back to help us find a way to watch it. I had to load in IE. Someone might be able to take the video and host it on an online place which then allows it to be embedded in a post here.

CC, here in Northern Indiana the RES spawn the same time as BG. They also spawn at the same depth of water, but in some lakes they spawn shallower, some lakes a bit deeper. Pumpkinseeds also spawn at the same time, although they are not colony nesting fish like BG/RES.

In the local lake and in my pond, the RES spawn in shallower water than the BG, sometimes in water less than 12" deep.

Around here, both BG and RES prefer pea gravel over sand to make their nests in.....

what are the fish closer to the surface in the video just watching/waiting? Waiting for their turn on the nest?

The big ones are pure redears. Almost all of those smaller fish hovering are smaller bluegills. I suspect horned up males lol.
We do have some hybrid bluegills in the lake however there aren't any in this video. I've observed that the redears sure do seem to prefer their own kind though after watching them for a few years now during the spawn and they are very aggressive to defend their beds. They throw their weight around very well compared to the gills!
We have some real nice redears in the lake finally and have had to implement a strict catch & release policy on any 9-1/2" and over to protect them. We had one break the 10" mark earlier this year, which for us on this particular body of water is an accomplishment.
We used to see a lot of snails washed up on our shoreline from time to time, since we introduced the redears we don't see nearly the amount of snails present, not even close. I don't typically see the redears at the feeder, they may be using it, but I don't see them at the surface feed. The bluegills are a different story and they go to town once the larger bass and the catfish have had their fill.
