Is there an advantage of having the standup pipe inside the pond or is it better to have it on the outside. I had mine on the outside and was doing some dirt work around it when my tractor slide and broke it off. Now my pond is almost empty of water. No fish added at this time was pond just filled up but now not so much water left. I can put the standup pipe at either end.

IIRC, the advantage to having it on the pond side of the dam is to prevent the water inside from freezing and busting the pipe, if in a region with a cold climate. Maybe a better reason would be to prevent it from getting busted off by a runaway tractor. Sounds like something I would do, and usually when I screw up on the tractor, the wife is standing right there watching.

I think ideally the bottom portion of the standpipe is buried in the toe of the dam for support, but maybe you could anchor it by pouring a block of concrete. What is, or was, the height and diameter of your pipe?

I built this pond without any plan or idea on how started digging then found this sight and all the things that is shold have done different was too late. The pipe is 8" pvc and the stand up is around 5' the pipe goes through the dam and an angle from 3' ft inside the pond to ground level on the outside. The stand up inside the pond would be at the edge of the dam. This was where i had it orgainal and had some hair brain idea that it would be better on the outside so i move it now me and my screw ups are back to square one. Before i put the standup pipe back on just want to know what would be the best for the pond. If i put it back on the outside going to move it futher away from the pond dam mabe 10' to prevent me screwing up again with my tractor.(hopefully) Yep and she was there to say "I told you so"

If only 5' tall, I don't think I'd worry about it not being anchored, but if inside the pond, you'll need some sort of trash gaurd on top to keep it from getting clogged. Something like what they've got at Pond Dam Piping, http://www.ponddampiping.com/accessories1.html

One time I swung too wide with the tractor and the front bucket caught one of the cedar posts holding up the shed roof on the backside of the garage. The roof was dangling and looked like it might pull off the garage and collapse, but I lifted it back up with the front bucket and managed to get the post set again. The whole time, my wife was right on the other side of the garage running the log splitter with my son, and never noticed what was going on. I couldn't believe it.

thanks for the infromation I still have to decided on which way is the better or if there is one. If i put it in the pond should be tractor safe(maybe)if I put it on the outside my wife might ban me from driving my tractor around the dam. I am going this weekend to get another joint of pipe and elbow cost a couple hundread dollars sometimes i think me and my tractor is not cost effective as a DYI.
