OK fellas, got one for you. I have an existing pond, about .75 acres, average depth 7-8 feet. The dam has no keyway and water does seep through to the backside of the dam. The seepage is very heavy in the spring and all but stops by this time of the year after I've lost almost 3 feet of water depth.
The question is, can I fix the problem by digging a trench right down the middle of the dam and filling it with a clay/bentonite mixture? The dam is probably 10 feet wide. We also suspect that roots from a nearby large oak are contributing to the seepage.
I see lots of discussion about building a keyway in new pond construction or draining a pond and building a keyway. I want to know if you can put a keyway in an existing dam WITHOUT draining the pond.

If the keyway joins an impermiable layer at its base, you'll have a pond that leaks very little. I am in central Indiana, and in spite of the rainless July, my pond is down less than 6 inches, and we irrigate a commercial vegetable patch out of it. It is well worth the effort to seal up a pond!

If the leak stops, it shouldn't be a problem of not having a keyway.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

The keyway or core is done prior to building the actual dam. It is the bottom of the structure. Thus, if the water stops dropping at any point, the leak will be just above that water level. Had it been leaking from the bottom, it would never stop as long as there was water pressure(weight) from above.
