The friend that's down in Texas that I visited over the weekend has a HUGE dam. We drove the Suburban the length of the dam, and it's gotta be 1/2 mile long and a good 20' high. He said that the dam was built back in the 30's as part of one of the WP projects. I couldn't fathom how long and how much equipment it would take to build today. The "pond" is supposed to be 70 ac, but with the rains it's more like 100+ acres. The siphon pipe looks like it was 24" dia (concrete) and it's running full bore. The "pond" is up 4' from normal pool, but still had about 10' to go before it even thought of going over the top of the dam. I don't remember seeing the emergency spillway.

Well, actually, no. There really wasn't that much to see with the tall grass and the trees growing on each side of the dam (I know, I know) I'll try and ferrit out a google pic of the "pond".

Some of the government conservation dams are in my area. An NRCS engineer told me that they were built in the mid 60's, and most of them would cost over half a million to build today. These large earthen dams were built with compacted clay soil and many tons of lime soil stabilizers. The dam surfaces are dead straight with no sign of settling, and have 8 or 10 feet of freeboard.

squeeky:
The owner estimated 4-5 million in today's dollars to build it, and I believe him. It goes on forever!
