I've been catching these for years but never knew exactly what they were, my grandfather used to call them "Fly Perch". After doing some research the only fish that I can find that resembles it is the Roanoke Bass. This would make sense as our pond is less than 2 miles from the Roanoke River. If anyone has any idea if this is in fact, a Roanoke Bass I'd be very curious to know. Thanks
-Eric

Looks like Ambloplites rupestris (Rock bass) to me..
Actually a Centrarchidae not a percidae.

Rock bass usually have red eyes. Since you are in NC I think it is commonly called flier. The spot on the soft dorsal fin disappears with age.

I'd say you are correct Bill.. Looking back at picture with screen turned sideways. Incredible how secluded I am!! grin
Looks very "Crappie-ish".
Cool!
