Record Striped Bass caught by Dora man on the Black Warrior River DORA, Alabama- James R. Bramlett, 65, landed a 70 pound striped bass from the Black Warrior River near the Gorgas Steam Plant Thursday February 28, 2013. The fish was weighed on certified scales and officials and a fisheries biologist with the Alabama Department of Wildlife and Natural Resources were at Bramlett's home today to make it official. The fish is 45.5 inches long and has a 37.75 inch girth. It tops the previous state record by 15 pounds that has stood since 1959. That fish was caught on the Tallapoosa River. The catch may become the new IGFA world record for a landlocked stripe bass. That record currently stands at 67pounds, 8 ounces.
Bramlett used a Mustad 6.0 hook, Ambassador 7000 reel, a catfish Ugly Stik rod with Berkley Big Game 30 pound test line to catch the fish of a lifetime.

So he snagged it? LOL

Sorry couldn't resist. It didn't say anything about bait -just a hook.

Wow I wonder how old a fish that size would be? Anybody have an educated guess?

BTW that fish is huge even with out using the techniques of the Condello school of photography! wink

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Man I'd like to see news like that about a HYBRID STRIPER that'd be awesome..

I believe in catch and release. I catch then release to the grease..

My high striper, not HSB, is just shy of 20 lbs.

He was using my all time favorite rod, an Ugly Stik.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Cecil I would imigane that one is right around 20 yrs old. I heard of one that weighted right at 50# near 4' caught in bama that was said to be 20yrs old. The big ones are usually caught on big gizzard Shad where I fished. I fished the Coosa river in Bama for them in the 90's. Never pulled out one near that big though.

Mark, below the dam at Lake Granbury about 25 to 30 years ago. Using big bluegill for bait on home made calcuttta cane surf rods and large spinning reels. I expect it was 20 pound test. We got into tube floats and, using flippers, went out into the fast water. We hauled a rock with heavy rope and dumped it overboard with the end tied to the tube as an anchor. This allowed us to cast about 100 yards to the back of the dam where the big stripers hung out. When they hit we hauled them in. When they got close, we cut the anchor loose and headed downstream in a hurry. About 150 yards downstream we got into shallower water where we could handle the fish. One day there, my Brother caught 3 over 17 pounds. Quite a day. I think his biggest was about 24 pounds. I still have my rod. They finally closed off fishing below the dam so that ended the fun. Big cats weren't hard to come by fishing at night on the lake side of the dam..

45.5 x $13.00 per inch. If the angler approached me I'd try and convince him to have a mold made of it. A fish that big will have grease bleeding issues even with a cast head.

I know nothing about the river it was caught, so someone who does... Is it a tailwater area to a large reservoir? To grow stripers that large, I would have to think it would be and rather large too.
