Not 200 yards from where my dad caught the bobcat, he caught one of the prettiest coyotes I have seen. She was a decent size at 32 pounds.

Nice!
We need him to trap the 3200 acre farm. Yotes running all over the place. I had the opportunity to go 'yote hunting today, but I am running behind in getting work done, so I kept my butt glued to the computer chair.
They're mating now, aren't they?

They're mating now, aren't they? She had 6 little ones in her. So I am guessing the mating season is over now as they were the size of mice. She had s stomach full of deer hair and turkey feathers. The landowner was thrilled that both she and the bobcat are gone. He is big with the NWTF and loves his turkeys.

CJBS2003....how do those type traps work? Is there bait/scent used? Or are they just placed on known trails & hope one steps in it?

Travis, you are hurting my feeling. You didn't post the pictures of the 2 skunks Tim caught at the farm.

I have a wazoo of coyotes around my property. At night, you can hear them howling like crazy. I have the ten acres my house sits on fenced with field fencing, but I'm sure they can squeeze into our 1st 10 acres through the 3, 14 ft. gates and the 1, 16 ft. gate. Probably time to invest in night vision, get my rifle, and thin the herd some. Talked to my neighbor and he says he figures we got at least 100 of them in our parts.....Say, maybe I ought to just put up signs around my property stating: "No Coyotes Allowed".......That'll solve it!

I believe the male bobcat came to bobcat estrus, I know shocking! HAHA The coyote was caught on a hay set with red fox urine.

I kinda like the coyotes and cats. They are the only possible deterrent for the pigs. They can't tackle a big one but can do a number on the smaller ones.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Use fish !! Yotes are a different matter. This one ate to many fish. Dead fish that had been in an ice chest for a week - no ice. There was ice to start but relative they were left for did not come pick them up. A week later - yuck. Dumped them behind the block house . Yote came in and ate to many or maybe got a bone stuck. If you look close you can see fish on the ground and no marks (wounds) on the yote.

Dave, if you have a lot of 'yotes, that's probably the reason for the deer herd being thin. The 'yotes eat a tremendous amount of newly birthed fawns. Dr. Grant Woods did a study, and in an area where 'yotes weren't controlled, they ate right around 80% of the newly birthed fawns within the first 4 hours of the fawn's life.

My uncle found a coyote den and set up his game camera over it. In a one month period during fawning, he counted 17 different fawns being brought into the den. In the end he killed the mother and the 7 pups she was raising.

Right now I am testing a few areas to see if the yotes will be canibals. Using a few that were trapped as bait to catch more. I have read different opinions on this. Some say they don't care and will eat anything, others say that if you put out a dead one it will turn them off like a light switch. I figure nothing like first hand experience to find out.
CJB- what does your dad do with them? I have found around here that nobody wants them, even for free. Could be a regional thing here.

I was wondering where all our deer went..... A .243 should be a quick fix for the yotes I have around here. I sure don't want them eating my dogs either!

I look at it this way. A fawn is like a lamb. Completely defenseless. I know yotes do a number on sheep if let alone at night.

Dave, I was just as suprised as you. 80% in the first 4 hrs of birth is amazing. He said that trapping them by a GOOD trapper was the best way of controlling them. Traps work 24/7. But, if the trapper isn't good, a number of them will get pinched or escape from the trap. They learn quick, even faster than C&R CC's. With the traps on the market now, even if a domestic dog were to get caught, it could be released without harm if the traps were checked every 24 hr. A domestic dog will learn the ropes about as quick as a 'yote, so I have no worries about setting traps where hunting dogs are used. I'd let any hunters with dogs using the property know in any case. If they didn't know, I could show them how to open the trap to release their dogs. Heck, if Highflier can learn how to set traps in a couple of minutes, anybody can learn how to open them safely!

I guess I'm in the minority, as I don't mind coyotes. I think it works the same way as a pond....if there's ample forage,(deer) then the coyotes will prosper. I've never trapped or killed a coyote, and when I'm in the woods, or fishing on the edge of the woods, I don't feel the need to carry a firearm, even though my game cams routinely catch coyotes. I've never felt threatened by them.
But...I can appreciate a good catch. Nice job with the hay set.

Sprkplug, I have more concerns in the woods with 2 legged critters than the ones with 4 legs.

I wish the yotes would thin the deer herds around here better, but some "good old boys" down the road from me are fanatic yote hunters. They trespass like they own the place and corner yotes with hunting dogs into people's garages. Nobody gives these guys grief though, as it is perceived to be of service since many folks loose pets regularly out here.

But...I can appreciate a good catch. Nice job with the hay set. Well here in Oklahoma, you better carry if you have a large acreage. We have every predator you can imagine! We have them there "souped-up wildcats", better known as cougars. We also have Bobcats, badgers, skunks, coyotes, and other "nasty's" that will put a serious hurtin on you! I pack either my 9mm or my .357 magnum when I'm stomping through my heavily wooded 40 acres.....and I don't go anywhere afoot without my three Pit Bulls! If'n that ain't enough, we have Black Bear ranging this direction from Eastern Oklahoma. With my luck, I'd be the 1st victim in central Oklahoma to get mauled to death by a critter that isn't even supposed to be here!!!!!

It doesn't have the value western coyotes have for what ever reason. I believe he's getting around $25-$30 per fur for coyotes. The big money animal fur wise in VA are river otters. They're fetching between $120-$150 per fur. Muskrats are also up this year, for as small as they are he's getting $8-$12 per fur.
