Yet still the ice isn't thick enough for skating! Maybe this evening. Every time we get a good thick layer, we get a big warm-up and it melts around the rim!
Anyone crazy enough to fish in this weather? 30 minutes out there I was ready to quit.

Dogs get NO walking in these temps!!
Excerpt from Robert Crais' "The Monkey's Raincoat:" "She took another microscopic bite of her sandwich, then pushed it away. Maybe she absorbed nutrients from her surroundings."

Mine have no interest in being walked at these temps - and one is even a Chesapeake Bay Retriever who ought to relish the cold! Instead, he spends days like this curled up under the air hockey table in front of the furnace vent!

When Luna was alive, you couldn't get her to come inside, once I moved to the boonies in my TT. Maybe for 15 minutes or so, but then it was right back out. She loved to climb on top of snow piles I pushed up with the tractor and perch there. She knew what was going on with everything, all the time! Water and snow, her two favorite things. This didn't last long: (BTW: Sunfish Culture Guide on the couch) Wouldn't even come in the garage at my sisters. Wanted me to come out and play. Too cold!!! Something in the woods caught her attention. Luna will be very difficult to replace.

I know what you mean, buddy. My yellow lab, Sue, was the same way. If she had a choice, outside was where she went. I don't know how many times she'd go swimming in creeks with ice chunks floating down them, often trying to retrieve them for me even though I had no need! That dog loved snow, especially in her older years. It seemed to totally rejuvinate her to the point she'd act like a puppy again for awhile after coming back inside. I miss that girl!

Our little Shortstop LOVES the outdoors. Wanted to play, play, play this morning on her walk. She was going nuts with her leash as she wanted to run free. If I don't get her out 2x per day, I will wind up with a very upset dog and an unpleasant surprise.
She was fine, I was not. That cold wind shot through my jacket like it wasn't on.
She is part sheltie, part German shepherd so she has some of the fur coat of the sheltie, but to me, it doesn't look like enough. I think her you metabolism keeps her warm. When she gets older, I bet that will change. She put up a fuss trying to get her back inside, so she certainly wasn't miserable.
At least her steamer isn't going to stick to anyone's shoe today.

A few tears rolling now BTW: The avatar I have is her "don't bug me look", kinda like, "you know what is really going on ?" "I got it covered" type of look, so no worries! Dwight's mean look ain't even close to what that pic portrays, but you have to be there and know. Those darn tears are having a field day today. Sorry!

Me, too. I know what kind of bond you had with Luna because it was the same thing for me and Sue. Special dogs, buddy.

Geeze it is cold! It got up to 16 F degrees about 2:00 PM. It is back to 9 F degrees now, and still very windy. I've taken HOT water to the chickens three times today. Within an hour or so, it freezes solid. What do our northern friends, like Blair and Andemann, who live in near-permafrost, do in this weather? How do they keep their chickens and fish warm? I think I've burned as much wood today in my basement stove and our main floor stove, as I've burned during the previous two months. Time to go out and tuck the chickens in for the night. I just ain't gonna kiss them goodnight.

Live in a close to work apartment that boasts free heat as part of the bill, then put a 1500 watt heater in your bedroom, just to take the chill off, then go crank up the electric stove/oven in the kitchen, sucking high juice quantities, just to take the chill off. Glad I am getting out of here soon

Ken, the sun will be going down shortly here and the temp has dropped to 62. As we discussed last weekend, that's a dry 62.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

She's out there sniffing and messing around and I'm freezing my *** off.

What's a real hoot is when I've gone to Florida in the winter and the temps drop into the 50's. Some of the locals are so bundled up you'd think it as the North Pole.

Static heat or cold I can take. It's those big change days that hurt like when it does a 30+ degree change that you were not expecting.

Huge temperature changes within the day. Today we started out in the mid 20's and went up at 60 today here in central OK. Basically there is no moisture in the air to help control temperatures. Sort of acts like a desert.

Chickens are in the deep freeze, fish are under a 3' blanket of ice.
For our pets we use a water dish that you has heating element to keep it from freezing. Pets have heat blankets or heat lamps to keep them warm. Sounds like our dog is alot tougher then most.

I can't see why all the wusses were complaining about the cold. I was walking around all day long in a short sleeved shirt and was able to brave the cold just fine.

Dolly my dog thinks she cannot go outside unless I go with her and that is great since she makes a great walking companion. We log around three miles everyday around the farm and pond which is great for my health and conditioning. But this starts early in the mornings, this morning it started at 2:15am and 12 above, every couple of hours we start walking again at her insistence. I dress for what ever the weather is. 105 degrees last summer, rain, -14 chill yesterday morning, 14 inches of snow a couple of weeks ago,, we go walking. She hunts every step of the way. What ever is around or in season. Frogs, tadpoles, birds, squirrels, turtles, snakes and right now it is mostly mice. She bites there head off and eats the heads. There are decapitated field mice all over without heads. They all have their personalities don't they. Love this friend.

JKB, it's always dry here. Getting wet just doesn't happen that often.

Another chilly one! Walked Shortstop last night with 20mph wind at 4 degrees. That has a way of biting you! I had to drag her little behind back inside as she didn't want to go just yet.

This is her when the walk wasn't long enough! Sometimes I cannot find the time to walk her more than a mile... like when I have to work. At the pond with a stick:
