Rumor has it certain parties are questioning my morels... Unexpected bonus on the land this Spring. For those of you who aren't familiar with the Yellow [Blonde] Morel Mushroom [Morchella esculenta], these are remarkably delicious critters that even classic shroom haters often enjoy. There are three species we typically find in the wooded draws of NE - the Black, Gray and Yellow - but one can likely find them in deciduous forests throughout North America. Locating Morels is not rocket science, but timing their brief appearance stumps even the most grizzled veterans at times. It's all about soil moisture and temperature. Morel hunting is a Hudson family tradition handed down through four generations - and my kids were finally introduced this Spring as they are old enough to withstand the rugged terrain which the Morel frequently calls home. Sadly, most of the areas from which these were found is now 10' beneath the water. I'm hopeful they'll spring up somewhere again though. These are pics of what I consider Yellow and Gray's, laid out on the dehydrating trays for a while until I vaacuum seal and freeze them. I've had them up to 3 years later and they were still outstanding. Almost the lowest setting here... Little hint on the prime time: Lilacs are blooming and do you remember this Pondboss cover? Lid is down and it's dehydrating time.

Man those are some good looking morels! You definitely got talent finding them... The deer seem to get most of them before I can find them. You are right, they do taste great!

Speaking of conference antics... 1. My collection efforts of local flora were at JHAP's request...all I know is I left a brown sack full of fungi in a marked tree trunk along with YES Tales from Topographic Oceans vinyl. I have no idea what he was up to.... 2. I think I was exceedingly well behaved...at least until I discovered I had been enjoying $13 Vodka sodas for four hours and witnessed the cumlative bill. I understand SOME of the esteemed product vendors were demonstrably racous, animated, or otherwise so blitzed they ended up needing some assistance getting to their rooms. At least I was on vacation...simply no excuse for that conduct. 3. For those of you doubt the existence of afforementioned Sturgeon Rasslin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LH8ksoEwEjM

Now those are new to me. Tell me what you know, please? We still haven't had our first freeze, but days are in the 50s and nights in the upper 30s. There are lots of deciduous [oak, ash] forests along the platte and missouri river only 30 min from here. Do you recommend hitting them now?

"You're more than just aeration, Sue!"
So you're saying Sue has gas? Real nice.
GAS stands for Guitar Acquisition Syndrome.

I do have a slight case of Guitar Aquisition Syndrome, Sunil, how did you know? No where close to the extent that you have GAS, of course! I've only purchased about 4 guitars in the last 2 years.

That's pretty GASsy by most folks standards.

TJ: Yep, I'd be out looking now. If you find some that are old, remember that place for next year. They can get pretty big, I've found 20#'ers. I've found them under old, but still living Maples. I have only found Morels on my place once in the last 6 years, and it was only a few Yellow's. I used to go out in the Fall with another guy that really knew his 'shrooms, we'd pick a bunch of buttons in the Fall as well. One tip. Never, I mean NEVER pick them and put them in a plastic bag. The one time that I got sick was when we put them in a plastic garbage bag. IIRC we had 4 bags FULL, and tossed them all after the first meal.
