I stocked 120 F1 LMB in June and have started catching and tagging them so I can track and follow their growth etc. Question is, how many is enough to provide me consistent feedback over the years? I don't want to tag more than I need to, but I also want to be able to occasionally catch a tagged one as well. I was thinking about 25% (30 fish) or so. Does that sound about right?

Excellent question that I have never seen answered in the pond context.

A 10% sample would provide enough data to do RW calculation sample. That is also a rough equivalent to a ES survey.

If you want to follow every fish then as close to 100% as possible. I see no reason to do that unless you just want to.

You cant catch every fish as many will not bite a lure/hook. This is even true with aggressive fish. So if you are tagging caught fish then you are sampling the "biters". Following your aggressive fish only would be interesting. When you catch one later that is not tagged (after the initial tagging) then compare it to the tagged fish for size and condition.

25% is plenty for condition analysis.

Sounds good. I have just a few left to tag and I'll be at 25% so I think I'll stop there. Thanks!

I like 100%. Five or so years down the road, I would like to identify my original stockers vs offspring.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Dave has a point. That is a reason also to have them all fin clipped at the hatchery. Then you won't have to catch everyone and tag it even if that is almost impossible.

As you keep fishing if you catch any that look really healthy then tag them so they will not be removed down the road.

If you catch a tagged fish more than once, you know that it is aggressive toward lures (or really dumb) and probably should stay in the pond to pass along those genes.
