Today I was doing a little cast ney survey and catching several LMB under 8 inch and noticed they had large difference in eye color. I stocked F1 and Florida from a reputable source.
The ones I thought to be more fla genetics based on color pattern had what I would call a "normal eye" regular size, and a small orange iris.
The others had what looked like much larger eyes than proportional for their body. They also had a much larger orange iris.
Wondering if this could be genetics/environment response. maybe male/female. Pure/mix genetics. Age related?
Maybe I can get some pictures of the differences and post them later.
Any ideas? just wondering

Large eyes can mean skinny fish...

The head is probably large in proportion to the body. Got pictures?
Probably have a lack of forage.

Fish eyes grow at a constant rate, while the body grows at a rate proportionate to the amount of food available. Eyes that look too big for the fish body = too little forage for that sized fish.

ok thanks guys. I agree but was asking why some had more color. just older eyes have more color is that what your saying?

maybe I explained myself wrong. The total eye size was (virtually) same on all fish. The eyes appeared bigger because they had more orange vs the others. Some had a larger % of eye orange.
Anyway just wondering. Ill post pics next time I get out there.
