Our fishing club's hatchery is considering trying to spawn smallmouth bass. They are present in our freshwater streams and rare in our 350 acre lake. We'd like to augment the population. I think I read on here that smallmouth don't really reproduce in captivity but a Google search revealed hatcheries raising them. If anyone has experience in this area, we'd appreciate your input. Thanks.

I have smallies reproducing in my pond.
Without oversimplifying things, you just need some mature smallies and some gravel/rock beds, and they'll do the the rest.
There are threads on here about creating smallie spawning beds.
On a side note, smallies taken from a river or creek might not do as well in a pond, at least the original stockers.
Excerpt from Robert Crais' "The Monkey's Raincoat:" "She took another microscopic bite of her sandwich, then pushed it away. Maybe she absorbed nutrients from her surroundings."
