Hi Everyone! My name is Chi. I live in CA. One day I asked one of the kids I work with if they knew where their food comes from. Their response was the super market. I said "really?" So I asked where did the super market get it from? All I got was a shrug. It inspired me to make my own system to show the kids that food doesn't magically appear at the super market. I noticed a lot of systems are a lil um "3rd world" looking for the lack of a better term. This is v1.0 for me to get all the plumbing squared away. It is made with a 200 gallon tote, 4" ABS pipe for the grow beds. 500 gph pump. Right now it is all running on house power but in the spring when the storms are over will switch to solar. Also it will get some cedar paneling around it so it will be more presentable. Fish will be a mix of tilapia, channel catfish or bullheads. I think I might need to add a settling tank but i'll see how it goes. Any suggestions to improve the system are welcome. Fast forward 2 weeks from when I first started. I planted some lettuce seedlings. I forgot to take pics of how small they were. Went to check on them today and took some pics. Hot and steamy in there. 47 degrees outside and 63 inside. Lettuce looking good. Lots of root growth. Basil and Oregano doing good!

Now you just need some tilapia in the water system and you'll have a full meal!

Right now I am teaching the kids out of my own pocket. I pitched the idea to one of the Directors of Adult Education. Hopefully we can get some funding and do it in a larger scale. That is why I am looking for Bullheads. If any of y'all have any bullheads you want to get rid of send them my way. Otherwise I'll save my pennies and hit up my man Rex. Here is a little presentation I made for the director: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHoMY2fb1eY

Bullheads tolerate low water quality as does many of the tilapia. IMO Big advantage to the bullheads is they will tolerate lower water temperatures for longer periods where many plants still grow well (low 50sF) and still maintain very good health with very low stress. Tilapia even blues start having stress and health problems when water temps drop below 60F for long periods.

My strawberries did not do worth a crap last year. I heard that strawberries and trout are a good combination.

Thanks Todd! I'm thinking when I get to have a real pond I can use this planting technique to filter the water as well as grow things to eat. Aquaponics uses only 10% of the water and a 1/4 of area of a traditional garden.

At those ratios, you could grow a whole farm using a real pond!

Found a killer bullhead fishing spot I caught prolly 20 or so healthy fat 10-12 inchers.. If you could figure how to get them out there you'd be set up.. Why exactly was you interested in bullhead again?
