Something in the cyprinid family?

I know what it's not. Not a common carp, not a bighead carp.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Looks like a common shiner to me. Closely related species would be the striped, crescent and white shiners as well. All from the family Luxilus. Oh yeah, that would be a male is full breeding colors...

Common Shiner Check out the breeding male photo... I will say, this specimen is one of the brightest colored males I have ever seen. I catch them a lot when fishing for trout up in PA. They are a very common stream fish up there. They are very widespread... They will survive in a pond, but will not reproduce. They make great fishing bait.

They make great aquarium fish too. Super hardy and will grow fast and have no problems eating ANYTHING. Flake food, pellet food, live food. Hard to get them to color up like that male Bruce caught unless you play with the lighting and temps. I am not sure they have ever been successfully bred in an aquarium though. They are a communal nester, so they hybridize like crazy with several other species.
