My ponds are all almost ice free. Anyone else?

Of course I did help them along with a surface aerator in two and turned on my diffusers in the middle once temps got up high enough.

I know winter's not over and they will probably refreeze but at least it probably won't be 12 inches and it's only a few weeks until March! Glad my ponds got a breather. I was worried there for a while as some of you know. I see the diehard ice fisherman on the ice fishing website are really depressed.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Almost. There were open areas around the pond edges last night. It should really open up today, as it is very windy and about 65 degrees.

We've still got our ice. \:\) However, that rain and the 40s and 50s temperatures really got rid of a bunch of snow. Actually, the DO levels in area lakes are not as low as expected, and now with the snow gone, hopefully we're getting a little more light penetration and oxygen production.

6" of ice this past Saturday... White caps today! 50 MPH gusts, talk about oxygen replenishment. Water level has risen almost 20" today alone, 15" drain is completely submerged.

I fished open water with TeeJaeh and Shawn Banks today. We caught 4 steelhead up to about 21 inches. Last night we caught one that was about 23 inches and they were gobbling up the Aquamax.

The day after tomorrow we will receive 7-11 inches of snow.

I think I'll go cry now.

Sorry Cecil, but if your pond is ice free already, you are not really in the North.

Not even close here, my pond came up several inches and there is about a foot of open water around the edges, thats it

Wow...it's been in the 80s down here. Of course, you couldn't live much further south than us and still speak predominantly English, so we're not the best barometer.

We have a cement holding tank fed by groundwater via windmill, and a tilapia is still alive in there.

So, then you are saying that you don't have any ice?

davatsa, I can sympathize with the horror you must be going thru not knowing the joys of ice & snow.

Ice free in southwestern PA.
Also had some fish kill. My son found about 10 dead RES yesterday.
This is a new pond, built in June 08, stocked 1st week of Nov 08.
Hope we didn't lose too many fish.
Also have YP and SMB in there - my son said he didn't see any of those.

Well, our ice is certainly gone. I think it probably blew onto the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I think I've got Theo's, Brettski's, and maybe even JHAP's leaves blowing in from the west.

We are being held captive today. We've had nearly constant 50-70 mph winds since last evening. Sometime overnight they blew a big tree down at the end of my driveway. I'd cut it up, but its got phone and electric lines tangled in it. We were told we are a very low priority in getting it cleaned up. Oh well.

Last week at this time we were in the single digits. Just yesterday we hit 70. Snow and winter are forecast to return on Saturday.

We need CSI-PB on the case of wivell's redear fish kill.

Fine, as long as they stop at my place either before or afterward.

Fish Wife ran a count this A.M. (the ice was completely off the pond) and sez I have 46 dead eatin' sized Lepomids, plus a small number of 3-inchish ones. I will go out after work today and remove/size/identify them. \:\(

All of my ice went away yesterday. When that ice started to move, it also took down all of my woodduck boxes and all of the structure that was sticking up above the ice! We had 70 mph winds to push it! I had put three loads of pea gravel out and that has been nicely distributed though!

46 dead - sorry to hear.
We stocked about 200 RES in Nov., about a 1/3 were in the 5-7" range, rest were in the 3-5" range
My son said these were larger fish that had died.
Wonder why they're more suceptible to "ice death" ?

Hope my SMB and YP are ok. I would like they would have turned up along the banks like the RES if they too had perished.

You should try them first, you know, before the family does.
