My tilapia finally died this last weekend. I didn't go there sunday so this morning I dipped out three large dead ones. I checked the gills of some little ones and the gills were pretty pink. The gills on two of the large ones were red and they looked fresh. My grandfather always said a fish was good to eat if the gills were reddish instead of pink or white. I've looked at the gills all my life and it sure doesn't take long for fish to lose color. Are those two tilapia good to eat?

I've heard the tip about the gills too and also been told that the eyes should be moist and not cloudy(except for walleye).

I applaud you for not being wasteful but Tilapia fillets run about $2.99/lb on sale here. I'd almost buy you a pack just to keep you from trying to eat one you found floating.

If you are having trouble disposing of the dead tilapia I recommend mailing them in business reply evelopes you get with credit card ads.

Brian,

Do the words "fresh fish" mean anything to you?
\:\)

Seriously I would never take a chance on fish. Good way to get really sick. If in doubt throw it out.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.
