Just scanned new issue of mag and quickly read article about snake head in WI. It was initially id'd as a Amia calva or bowfin. I saw the picture, and I'm not sure if I would have figured it out without being aware of the possibility of it being a snake head. In the picture, it looked like it had some purple in it. I have caught a spawning male bowfin, and they have an irridescent, almost chartreuse color to them. anyway, it was promply caught, photographed, and released. I'm sure the biologist has gotten alot of ribbing and jokes made around the office. I am familiar with that stretch of the Rock, since I live a few miles away. It is a small, warm water river known for catfish, some walleye, and alot of carp. I can't imagine a tropical species making it more than a few months. water temps are in the upper 40's. There is always the possibility of it finding a warm water discharge though.

Exotic species, including snakeheads, are proving to be unwelcome in native environments. Common carp are a classic example. Not native to the U.S., common carp were introduced many years ago as a vegetation control species. Now, they have reproduced and grown themselves into the dominant positions of too many public lakes and waterways.
If biologists could accurately predict the consequences of snakeheads, there might be less obsessive/compulsive behavior about the creature.
Since there are no known predators, and the fish can leave the water and move about, it's a scary situation.
