We had a big rain the other day (4"). Afterward I walked around the pond and was amazed at the number of large (3-4") crawfish. Every two foot, all around the pond, out on the bank, in the outflow, everywhere were crawfish. This pond is one year old, and only has FHM and CCs in it. Tons of FHM, probably only 20 or so CCs left. They run from 3-4# on average. This pond is all clay/iron ore, and I did not add any crawfish. This was a pasture one year ago. There is no pond that would wash crawfish in the pond. I guess my CCs are not eating them at all, or maybe too many FHM, easy meals when the feeder goes off. I intend to put about a dozen HSB in there next week, just to help control the minnows. Is this normal? I do not have a dam, so I am not worried about the tunnels. Or should I be? About 1/4 acre pond. BB
Pictures (closeup is best) showing pincers, top view, side view, and underside view would help us get an idea what type they are and where they came from.

Any plan to put any other predators in the pond besides a few HSB? IMHO the crawfish showing up could be a blessing or a curse. They would be a blessing as they like to eat FA and are great forage for predators. They would be a curse if they are left to populate without significant predation to control their numbers. They will remove all vegetation and stir the pond up if you don't have predators to control them.
I'm not a pro...just my 1 cent

I will also be putting in a few catfish (undecided on CCs again or blues)but only 20 or so. I still have a few 3.5# or so CCs in there, probably 15 or so left. Working to remove them. I will see if I can catch some crawfish for pics. Here is a standard size the CCs are now, and a 5# 4oz that I put in last year as a 3.5# fish from the local lake. BB
