Is anyone aware of a study regarding catch and release, and its possible negative effects on large, (over 1 lb.) Bluegills, specifically during hot weather or periods of elevated water temps?
"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"
If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1) And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1) Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT? PB answer: It depends.

Don't know about studies but have caught more than my share of CNBG in hot Texas pond water, and to the best of my knowledge never have had a fatality other than "operator error". Gill hooking and overplaying fish 'til they die are most likely candidates IMO. George

Thanks George.... I also believe that a penchant for ultralight tackle might very well play a role here.

UL tackle is a blast, but think about a superbraid - allows a lot more pressure to be put on the fish. It's all I fish with in my ponds. Fireline Crystal is pretty solid...

Only negative I gather from big BG is once you catch them big boys they don't like to bite a hook again I'd say their alot smarter than we give them credit for..
I believe in catch and release. I catch then release to the grease.. BG. CSBG. LMB. HSB. RES.

BG like most fish build up lactic acid in their system when stressed by catching. BG are not particularly subject to that problem (not as much as LMB or HSB) and not as bothered by warm water. But it can happen.
Some studies state that BG can become subject to/ develop catchability problems but not as much as LMB.
