My wife has a conference in San Antonio Texas from March 19-21. I may tag along. Is there anything a person should be sure to see or do in that area or between there and Illinois? Any good places around there or on the way to fish? If I go, we'll probably drive so would have a car; but we may be in a bit of a time crunch...

I love San Antonio - the riverwalk is really cool and there is a delicous Mexican restaurant right there on the river. You should drive by Big Cedar Lodge on your way down or up...

You could try to get a sneak peak at avatsa with his hairless poodle and pink suspenders.
It's an image not to be forgotten.

The Mercado is neat. There is a Mexican food restaurant next to it. Don't have over one margarita there or you'll never go home.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

If you are into trap, skeet, or sporting clays shooting the National Shooting Complex is there. Something like 50 trap/skeet ranges all lined up. Also a neat shooting museum and a decent sporting clays course.

I'd like to hear more about San Antonio too. Wife and I have plans to go there next month. We'll probably stay at the Drury Inn - Riverwalk. I live for Mexican food (and my pond of course).

Eat at Mi Tierra resturant. It is down by El Mercado and the Dave was talking about I think. It is a landmark.
In Dog Beers, I've had one.

Yeah, that's it. Don't get the cabrito(goat) there. It's pretty bad.

Be sure to visit the Buckhorn Saloon and Museum. It has a unique Texas flavor, good food and drink, and is very near the Alamo and Riverwalk.

Is Lincoln, NE on the way? If so you could stop here and fish.

LOL, Burger. You and Theo are both correct. Chili and Chile are homophones, or at least they are in San Antonio. They are both pronounced "chee-lay" depending upon where in the city you find yourself. And since I'm being so technical, San Antonio is pronounced "sænænˈtoʊnioʊ." I didn't know those characters existed. A few interesting tidbits about my home town: San Antonio is the 7th largest city in the country (not a fact most people know) after passing Dallas and San Diego in the last 2-3 years. Estimated population is 1,328,984 in town with a metropolitan population of around 2 million. San Antonio is the only city in the United States hosting three Level I Trauma Centers within the city limits (2 military, 1 civilian). San Antonio has one of the largest military concentrations in the United States. Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base (one of the world's largest training complexes), Randolph Air Force Base (headquarters for Air Force personnel management), Brooks City-Base, and Port San Antonio are all located in the city. The defense industry provides a $5.25 billion impact to the city's economy. Last, but not least, the San Antonio Spurs. But seriously, anyone who comes to SA needs to see the best attraction of all--ahvatsa and davatsa's ponds about 50 minutes south of town. We love taking family and friends out there, and our specialty is putting little kids on big fish using cane poles.

I've also seen photographic evidence that there are supermodels there.

Isn't San Antonio "The Capitol of Chili"? To expand slightly on davatsa, San Antonio is "The Capitol of Chili". Santiago is the capitol of Chile. Cincinnati is the capitol of Kentucky.

The HSB (going on 3 years) are large enough I have gone to 25lb. test line on the poles! My cardiologist and his son were out and landed several near 5 lbs. That will make a young man smile everytime! ________________________________________________________________ Last weekend a neighbor offered to let us try out his new toy on our tractor. A Duribuilt DP-84 3 yd. dirt pan. It was a perfect fit for our 60hp 'Bota. Been wanting some rearing ponds and if well makes this may be the ticket! Ordered one yesterday. http://www.agequipmentusa.com/agequipmentusa/PDF_files/Durabilt%20Dirt%20Pan.pdfedit Sorry Rangersedge. I just realized this was your thread. While posting thought this was davatsa's. Another cup of coffee and back to lurking...

I grew up in SA. River walk and Mercado is defiantly the place to go, if you only have a few days. Alamo is down there Mercado is cool for some culture and you defiantly want to eat at El Mirador. Even for a local that's one of the best Mexican food restaurants on the planet. Enjoy it is a great city.

I join Ranger in thanking everyone. Looks like our trip will have to include at least the Alamo, the River Walk, the Mercado, Mi Tierra, the Buckhorn Saloon and Museum, and El Mirador. Great ideas! Too bad the Cavaliers won't be playing the Spurs that week.
