In college I assisted grad students tagging fish with radio tags and it was very much like that. Had to cut them open insert the tag and sew them back up.

Back in the day (80's, I think it was) I served as a consultant for some of the Oklahoma Fisheries Research guys I knew, offering technical advice on dissection techniques and suturing of LMB along their bellies. They were obtaining liver biopsies to distinguish between Florida, Northern and hybridized strain in some of their brood stock. At that time chromatography of liver enzymes was the technique used to tell the difference as I understood it. The fish were anesthetized in a tranquilizing solution and the biopsy was done without supplimental oxygen as the procedure was only about 30-45 seconds long when done proficiently. They wanted suggestions on what size suture, needle type, suture type and stitch technique would work the best and be quickest.
