my new 3/4 acre pond just jump about 20" due to the hurricane. that put it at full, actually it got about 6" higher than full pool several times during the storm. there has been no rain now for about 24 hours and my standpipe out flow looks like it is about to stop. there is a pretty nice stream of water flowing in at all times. will a pond of this size have a lot of evaporation and does a new pond have to saturate the banks for a while?

please dont say it is leaking!!!

Saturation loss is very common in the first year for a new pond.

Evaporation loss this time of year up here can easily be 1/2" per day; undoubtedly a little higher for you in 'Bama.

I would take that as a very good sign.

pond is still about 1 inch below full pool. i am assuming that evaporation is alot less in cooler winter weather???

my pond catches so much watershed, i am still afraid of a big rain. my e-spillway has a pretty good stand of grass on it, but not perfect yet. also when it rain really hard and filled the pond rapidly the first time, i lost several small fish out of the pipe.
will the larger bg go out the pipe during a heavy rain??

Anything that is to close to the pipe or dirt spillway when they start to run will go down stream. They will fight the current by nature, but when it gets to strong Out they go.

do bg normally fight the current? i would think one that is 3"+ should be pretty strong.
