My first thought would be corn meal, or Diatomaceous earth. Some friends around here in East TX, swear by the corn meal. They say once eaten by the Queen, it swells up in her like Blue Bell, and she dies.
The corn meal's good for controlling Algae too.

I heard that killer bees will keep them under control.

I was told, but never tried it, that you can dump near-boiling water on he ant nest.

I know a guy who researches fire ants for the pesticide companies. He actually staked off an area at my place a couple of years back and started testing products.
Essentially, nothing worked as well as they advertised. Actually, they really don't work very well at all.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I don't know what he used. I do know that he used the most advertised brand.
One of the problems always encountered is, in the summer, the ants go 15 ft deep. So, no testing at that time.

The problem is that fire ant colonies now have multiple queens. The old colonies had mostly one so slow acting poisons could be picked up by workers and taken to the queen killing the colony. With multiple queens, it is much tougher to kil them off.
