Can anyone tell me if there are any books or good detailed info. on how to excavate a pond. After getting a quote of $18000 for an one acre pond I am looking for an alternative, do-it-yourself. Any suggestions, warnings, or comments would be appreciated.

I believe Ray Scotts book details pond construction - should be available on the net.

I've seen a lot of stuff on the Internet on pond building. Do a little research and you'll probably get overwhelmed by info from various state and federal gov't agencies. Look at tx.us/fish/infish/ponds. It is 51 pages using Adobe Acrobat Reader.

I just lost a lengthy post trying to edit it - this is a wonderful site, but I don't like its cut/paste/editing capabilities...
Basically, what it said is that I'm new here and getting advice too. I would read through everything you can on this site and talk with your local conservation office. Your state probably has some very good info on its webpage which you can find by searching.
FWIW: I purchased Ray Scott's 3 tape video series on ponds years ago and was very disappointed. One of the tapes was even blank. I should have tried to return it to BPS, but didn't. YMMV: I have read positive comments about it from others.
I do plan to purchase books, etc. from some of the main contributors to this site.
I would suggest you get additional quotes from other contractors or look at a different location. That sounds very high for a pond that size.
