Well I've been to every lumber yard and hardware store in the area, and while I want anything BUT that clumpy play sand, that seems to be the only thing store associates want to sell me.

What I'm looking for is some medium or fine light-colored beach sand to re-cover a ~20' x 20' beach area about 2-4". There's some old sand down already but I need to freshen it up with a new layer. Anyone have tips on where to get it, what to look for (or not look for), etc? Closest I've found is "white filtered sand" at a hardware store but they were out of stock. It came in 50lb bags for under $5. Would this be safe for a beach? It looks and feels very nice.

Have you checked with local aggregate places to see what they have available? If there is anything that suits you, it will be a lot cheaper than $0.10/lb. I would think of doing a beach in tons, rather than by the 50 lbs bag.

Check with the golf course suppliers. These companies have more types of sand than you could imagine but you will most likely pay a high premium for it. There is a company in Waupaca, WI called Waupaca Sand (715) 258-8566. I don't know them personally but I got there info from the Golf Course Builders Association of America membership list. I would just do a google search.
