I seen a post here somewhere about possibly cleaning out a concrete process facility that had to do with using the cleanings as a source of calcium but I can't find it now and can't remember if it was good or bad.. I went and looked at a HUGE pile of "Cleanings" at my local redimix and ask what it was.. he says primarily limestone in powder form. Looks a lot like finely crushed limestone with some of it looking "layered" in very small piececs. Wondering about using some of this the lay in a few areas to pile some gravel/rock/sand on to create some possible spawning habitat for smallies-or anything for that matter. Just not sure about the chemistry of this stuff. He did say there is no added calcium in this that would be used in production concrete?? Would this be a bad idea to use some small amounts of this??

Hello ewest, I'm actually fine on both counts.. was wondering if this could be used to mix with some quarter size limestone to use to cover some areas for better smb spawning habitat? Actually wondering if Ca could "be" too high. It's extremely cheap, accessible and I can haul about 25 ton a load. Would it be best to utilize something else gravel-wise?? Edit: I re-read this post, and although I've been involved in fisheries management for many years, with this being my first pond I've built for my personal use, I never realized how we accept a body of water as-is and just manage the fish..I feel like that's the easy part and the "pond" itself is showing me how little I really know about "pond" management...wow..

Me too. About the only thing I know for sure is that I have a lot to learn.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

If its hydrated lime (and I think it may be), you'll be killing everything in the pond. Make sure its ag-line before you start dumping it in your pond.

Imagine your beautiful new pond just reached full pool for the first time. It looks fantastic but....first time you put fish in they all die! I think of it this way... Since your not sure what the stuff is, don't take the risk unless you get it analyzed so you know for sure. As a minimum, I'd get a sample of the stuff and throw it in a bucket of ground water from the pond site and see what happens to the PH...maybe toss in a couple of small BG as well. It may be inexpensive now, but I'm thinking it would be a very expensive problem to fix if things go wrong. Just my 1 cent...
