Just got about 5-6 tons aglime washed into my 2 acre pond about 10 days ago. Everything was looking good. Ph got up to 8. Alkalinity up then...HARVEY hit!! pond was 20 inch low. Have had 16 inch rain in last 3-4 days!! Some time last night the water started going over the spillway for only the 3rd time in 3 years. My question is have I lost all my aglime and everything I have just achieved in the pond? I am in deep east Texas, Sabine County and it is storming bad still right now. Spillway is expected to run over for at least another 24-48 hours. Supposed to rain all day today. Have I just waisted a bunch of time and money??

Sorry James
I would say it depends how dissolved all the lime was. You will lose some... guess just wait and ck it after this event is over.. what a mess huh

i think the lime should be settled to the bottom by now. when i apply lime it only takes a day or so and the discoloration is gone. remember it is finely crushed stone, i don't think it actually dissolves. i would think that newly acidic silt might cover the lime during a flood more than it washing away.

YOu will loose some, but will still be better off because of what you put in. It is a wait and see, but you may need to put some more in , but probably not as much as the first round. Think of it as a yearly adjustment, some years you will need more, some years less.

I'd agree with Brian -- yearly adjustments. Do some water tests this fall and see how much alkalinity has been impacted.

For my adjustments, I buy 1000 lbs of pulverized lime from Lowe's and shovel it in by hand (25 bags x 40lb each; $3.10/bag * 25 = $78). It's more work to do this by hand, but cost effective if you can't get bulk lime shipped/spread cheaply.

Here is the item link:

Approx $3.10/bag if you buy more than 10 bags.

**Edit: I should clarify: not as cost effective than bulk, but works out well if you only need 500-1500 lbs

Thanks everyone. Just not used to having to treat my pond. Didn't need anything when it was new. This was the first time adding anything in 3 years. I will do as stated and watch it annually to see what it needs. I will test a lot after the storm.
