I have seen this mentioned as treatment for muddy water but my question is would this approach be safe for a pond where people swim?

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Alum was once used as treatment for swimming pools. It traps suspended particles in the water and then sinks to the bottom of the pool so that it can be vacuumed out.
