I found some alum online and it says that it's granular and 57.6%. Is this the kind you guys have used?

I used some that was pretty close to a powder. I bought it from Estes Chemical here in Dallas but the have distributors all over. I'm not sure what the actual aluminum sulfate concentration was.

Karmann - Not sure if you found a local source, but my counterpart in NY might be able to source some for you - or give you a local dealer to contact. Let me know if you're interested, and I'll check with him. I handle AlSO4 down here, but shipping it (anywhere) is a nightmare that is best avoided. I'm not certain about the 57.6% question. I can't access a label right now - but I believe aluminum sulfate is fairly consistent in its makeup.

Thanks guys. Kelly, I think I have found some locally but will keep you in mind if it doesn't pan out.

Karman, I would find out what else is in the stuff you found...Aluminum Sulfate (AlSO4) is 99.5%+ Alum and comes in powdered, ground, granular or liquid form (50 pound dry equivilent in a 55g drum). The is also food grade and industrial grade....Food grade is just slightly lower in iron contamination than the industrial grade.
