I have a 1 acre pond here in Ontario Canada. The pond is 16 feet in the middle and gets deep very quickly as it used to be an old quarry. The pond is very old and is full of many different types of animals. It has about four large snapping turtles. Also has many frogs crayfish minnows and tons of leeches. It also has lots of plant growth. I have identified the plant as curly leaf pond weed. I will be putting in a dye to prevent it from regrowing by not allowing it to get sun in the spring. I have also been using a weed rake to remove some of it. Will the dye hurt my animals? There are brown trout coming tommorow so those will be in with the dye aswell. Are there other ways to get rid of it? Aeration?

Gorgeous pond. Love the fountain!

Sounds like dye would be a good choice. I haven't heard of it doing harm to animals, though it will cut down on plankton bloom.

Re brown trout & aeration, please take care. Trout need a thermal refuge during the summer, and aeration could kill them if it makes the whole pond too warm.

If the fish will die I certainly wont put it in though the pond is very cold. From 2 feet down it was about 70. It is very cold at the bottom. Will the aerator hurt the fish? Thx

If you want to get rid of pond weeds, use Sonar. It's eliminated my problem and it stays that way for years. I have much, much, less algae growth too now. It's expensive as heck, but worth every drop. Works for over three years, then you renew it with about a half dose and you're good to go for another 3+ years.
