Hi guys,
I have a .25 acre pond that I plan on aerating. I just bought a used Gast 0523 pump on the auction site. My pond is triangular and about 8' to 10' deep.

My plan is to purchase 2 vertex diffusers, and either run them together in the same spot or separate them. The deepest part of the pond is in the widest end. Any thoughts on running this setup.. What would the experts do in this situation?

He is a link to my previous post with more info.

In a 0.25 ac pond with average wind exposure I would put the diffusers on one dual manifold in the deep section of the pond. This will circulate the majority of the pond that is deeper than 6ft which in most cases is the natural mixing depth. The shallow areas than 6 ft will not stratify at least for long enough to cause DO problems. What is the water clarity. How deep can you see a white coffee cup?

Thanks very much Bill. I have been reading a lot of your posts and I want to thank you for taking the time to help us amateurs. I would guess that seeing a white coffee cup wouldn't happen for more than 16 to 24", but I will not be able to check for a couple weeks. My plan is to find out the max depth for sure and to put the 2 defusers there.

Will this pump be too much for 2 diffusers? I don't want to stress the pump with too much back pressure.

Also, any tips on cleaning and maintaining the pump?

Thanks again!

Several pumps later, I am using the Gast 0523, with 2 Matala Air Base with 9" disk diffusers on a half-acre pond, similar depth as yours. I purchased the system from Keystone Fisheries, pump, manifold and cooling fans (one in, one out) based on recommendations from the Pond Boss forum. Works really well, quiet, efficient once I installed the Matala diffusers. Before, the change, the pressure relief valve hissed but worked with the old circular flexible hose diffusers, stopped immediately with the new Matalas. You should have good results with a similar system.

Great thanks.... What intake filter are you running? And do you have any overheating problems inside your box?

I'm no expert, but I am in a similar situation as you...1/4 acre triangular pond, 10 foot deep, & a Gast 0523 (just not in Florida).

I plan to use three diffusers. The pump will handle three just fine best I can tell, maybe 4 or 5. One will be placed in the 7 to 8 foot depth (hopefully this will secure a small thermocline for heat relief) and the other two in 4 foot depths about 75 feet apart. The one in the 7 - 8 foot depth should be all I need to turn the pond over 4 times a day. This leaves the other diffusers as bonus turnovers even though they are shallow. All the diffusers will be on flow control valves so they can be balanced or shut off if need be. I am leaning this way so that I can better disturb the surface. I have a fair amount of pollens and dust floating around and the pond will ice over a couple times during winter and having a diffuser close to shore will allow me to keep the ice open if need be.

According to Vertex's Lift Rate Chart, the lifting capacity of two separate diffusers is the same as two closely manifolded together.

If your looking for pure turnover rate for the dollar...manifold them
together. You'll save on line and plumbing.

If you have some extra money...spread them out for aesthetics.

No experience here...just lending my ideas.

To check the back pressure of one or two diffusers, hook one or both up out of the water to the pump - short hose or long hose. Read the pressure. It should be 0 if the pump is getting rid of all the air it is making. Most 9" membranes will not cause any back pressure hooked and run out of the water. Some Vertex brand diffusers will have a built in back pressure when connected & operated out of the water to the pump. Other membrane disk diffusers do not have this characteristic.

Cheapest redneck air filter is a threaded nipple out of the pump and a cloth rag wrapped several layers and secured around the nipple.

Thanks again Bill,
I just ordered 100'of 1/2" sinking hose from Home Depot of all places. I'll be ordering the Vertex soon from Hoosier's. I'll continue to update this and send in pictures as I move along.. I'm sure I'll have more questions.

Thanks again

Thanks for the link. It is likely shipped direct from Outdoor Water Solutions who supplies this to Home Depot. Reasonable price if shipping is included direct to your local store.
