newbie here. thinking of getting a koenders electric aerator, little pricey but pump is completely sealed and not needing any cabinet, also have some faith in the hatchery selling them. so the question is; have any experience with them? heard any good or bad?

Check out the amount of cubic feet of air per minute produced by the pump. Be cautious if it is not 3 cfm or above. Cabinets can be homemade cheaply for rotary vane compressors

namot, we have removed many of them over the years and replaced with more effecient systems.Unless they have changed they were low cfm compressors and low lift air stones and a few had large pore rubber membrane diffusers (still low lift)Continue to do your research.

thanks guys,I see it's rated at up to 1.5 cfm. will keep looking for now. besides the "make your own", (which I'm sure there's nothing wrong with), any recommendations? have a 1/2 acre pond 10 to 25 ft. deep. looked at your site Ted.

In a 0.5 ac pond, A system with a 1/4 - 1/3 hp rocking piston compressor and small pore membrane diffuser will provide strong mixing, plenty of turnovers per day and allow you to use reduced runtime for the compressor in northern OH - maybe 6-10 hrs per day. Have you been out there and measured the ACTUAL depth in that 0.5 ac? I strongly suggest you double check the the actual depth when it is full. If the pond has a uniform 3:1 slope, a 0.5 acre square pond cannot be built with a depth of 25 ft so it has any flat bottom. A shallower depth will allow use of a rotary vane pump.

I had the pond dug 15 years ago, at that time the contractor showed me the depth with his laser, probably silted in some over the years, I'll have to check for my knowledge. have just ordered a 1/4 hp rocking piston compressor (great minds think alike). will try your suggestion with a timer. thanks for input.

As I recall the 1/4 hp rocking piston is a single head model which produces less air (cfm) than the twin head model, thus your run time should be longer since the water moved/hr will be fewer gal/hr. In many instances (but not all) one can monitor degree of mixing by measuring water temps on the bottom of the deepest area. Effective mixing usually results in a 1-4F degree or less temperature difference (mid-summer) between top and bottom depending on when you take the temperature - before or after a run cycle. Dissolved oxygen measurements on top and bottom are the best way to verify the pond is getting completely mixed (turned over). Water visibility and maximum depth have affects on how long a compressor can remain off during on-off cycles.

you're getting kinda deep for me, Bill. (pun intended) the one I'm getting is the PA34 rated at 3.5 cfm.

Air flow of 3.4cfm should produce very good mixing in your 1/2 acre pond. With the proper diffuser, run times can easily be 4-7hrs per day in a newish 0.5 ac northern pond and produce complete mixing daily. Note those compressors may have difficulty restarting with back pressure in the airling soon after stopping. Contact me or supplier if you have difficulty. I am not familair with that special model number. Who is the supplier?

Bill and namont If the PA34 that I am fimiliar with has a "Stratus" compressor note that they are imported from Tiawan. The capacitor is zip tied and is a suspect brand in my opinion. Also the PA34-2 that comes from EasyPro has a pair of seperate single disc diffusers.I would ask to see the independent lifting data for this and any other aeration system.I have looked at these compressors and took a pass as far as selling them.

Ted - Good info. Thanks for sharing. Lots of questionable stuff out in the marketplace. PS: thanks for helping sponsor the PBoss Convention IV.
