Here is one of my setups that is not in use at the present time. The tire is not necessary as long as you attach a brick or two with stone diffusers as they add weight on their own. This set up was originally used with a rubber membrance diffuser which requires more weight. I really like using the garbage can lids as a base for all my diffusers.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Five gallon buckets for holding diffusers are prone to tipping over, expecially due to the weight of a weighted airline pulling on a taller diffuser with a smaller bottom area. Diffuser bases should be wide bottomed and very stable similar to the tire and garbage can lid in Cecil's photo.

I have it built to this point sorry for a shoddy drawing but I have no way of getting my pictures to the computer right now. but I think you get the idea I plan on adding weight in the bottom either sand or even a steel 25 lb weight. I could easily add a trash can lid to the bottom of the unit, as is the bucket has a 24" foot print, do you think 25 lbs will work for counter balance? And I am adding to pce sticks through the top part just under the diffuser to secure it in the bucket.

Oh I understand now about being top heavy, But I thought I had read that with alot of muck on the bottom that it should be up a little bit. I have a 30 gallon barrel that is in half, I could cut it down to about 12 inches tall put a hole in the side for the air line and leave the diffuser wide upon in the center and be low center of gravity and tie a rope or wire it up so I could move it

My 9" diffuser from Aquaticecosystems fits down in top of a 5 ga. bucket and lodges about 1/2 way down. I filled it 4 inches with gravel, tapped the diffuser down with piece of wood and hammer to secure it in the bucket. Or you can use 3 or 4 ss screws thru the bucket and diff. housing. The gravel for wt. and pvc pieces thru bottom make it very stable. The bucket channels the bubbles upward and helps prevent stirring up the bottom sediments.

I think 25 lbs is too much weight for a 9" dia membrane diffuser. 13 to 15 lbs is enough weight to hold the diffuser on the bottom. In my opinion you want just enough weight to hold it to the bottom during inflation & aeration. Too much weight will make it harder to remove it for periodic cleaning. Cross arms through the bucket will help stabilize the unit especially if you lower it to the bottom with a rope from a boat.
