Hambone -- first of all, welcome to Pond Boss. Hopefully some of our OK and TX friends will chime in.
Generally, when your temperature (several feet below the surface) dips below about 60 degrees, your feed isn't helping the fish, and most of the feed is going to waste.
Here in WV, our ponds have already been below 60 degrees for quite some time this season. I haven't fed since about mid-October, and I've got hybrid striped bass, trout, bluegill, and catfish that seem to enjoy the free food.
Good luck, Ken

Hambone - classic handle - welcome aboard!
Follow Ken's guidance, it's solid.
Now...tell us more about your little slice of heaven. What are your goals? What's your existing fishery? Any photos? We love photos!

HSB can and do eat better than BG and LMB below 60 F and will continue to eat to a lower temp. I can find the data but IIRC down to about 45 F. I don't feed mine below 55 but there are plenty of TShad and small BG and RES. This winter I will try hand feeding the HSB LMB pellets on warm days and see if they eat.

Hambone, my general take is to feed lightly in colder water and see what will be eaten.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Hey to all Pond Boss members,
Thanks for all the quick reponses, much appreciated.
My little slice of Heaven (which is exactly what the flyer from the real estate agent said when I purchased the place almost 3 years ago said) is 563 acres in SE oklahoma.I primarily managed for hunting but do have 4 small ponds that I am trying to manage for fishing for friends and family. My largest is only about 2.5 acres, the others about an acre. Wish like crazy I had one of those 10-30 acres lakes like most of my neighbors have. If I ever buy another property it will have more fishable water on it thats for sure. Anyway, when I purchased everything was overfished and out of balance so I'm trying to improve it. Stocked CC and hybrid striped bass last spring and feeding in 2 of the ponds. The other one seems pretty well balanced, with plenty of BG and some decent (3-4lb) LMB. Anyway as spring approaches I'm sure I will have many more questions, so thanks for your interest and look forward to gaining knowledge from experienced folks like you. Hambone

What size fish did you stock, and how was their growth this year so far?

Esshup, I stocked 6-8 inch HSB in May and by mid July they seemed like they had tripled in size within just a few months. [img:left] http://ghostbuckranch.blogspot.com/2010/07/striper-growth.html[/img]

That would be a fantastic growth rate. That would be a 2580% +- yearly growth rate. Of course we all know initial fast growth rates slow down a lot with age but still tripling in size in 6 weeks.
