Talking to my buddy about building my acre pond. He has a D5 dozer..he was thinking this might be too small for this project. What all equipment is usually required to build a well contoured pond?

hi azngunner, obviously a good operator(s) is imperative, equip. we used included a big cat excavator (track hoe) w/ 4' bucket, a D4 cat dozer, and an older (small) JD550 dozer.

They guy that I am talking to about building my pond uses a D4. He said he just got done doing one in Huntsville that was a little under 3 acres with the D4 and a drag-line.

A D5 in the hands of a good operator can do it. I had 2 of them doing a pond for me and it took about a week.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

The man in the seat is the main part of any piece of equipment.

Usually the conditions determine the equipment you use.
Rock, mud, distance.

A small dozer will move the earth with enough time.

Two dozers pushing side by side moves 3 times as much dirt as 1 dozer.

Doing more thinking into this pond idea...my concerns deal with the D5 dozer and traction. I plan on doing a 3 to 1 or 4 to 1 slope..my buddy's D5 with standard tracks...is this enough, or do we need different tracks? He tells me that power is not the problem, but he thinks his tracks won't be able to push dirt out. Also, if it comes down to it...how much is rental for a D6 hightracks dozer going for these days?

Here in Bryan I can get a D6 for roughly $600 per day or $2800 per week or $7000 a month. These prices can fluctuate and it also may increase with delivery fee, insurance, tax, etc.

Hiring somebody who already owns the D6 is $85/hr. So in essence it costs me an extra $40 to hire somebody to do a small job. On a job that takes a few weeks, that is where you will notice a big difference.
