Hi I am new to the forum and live in Upstate NY in schoharie county. I have 106 acres and have 4 dog training ponds now. In the back my property slopes and forms kind of a natural bowl which would easy to make into pond site, Soil all clay you make a hole it fills with water. So good site and I am calling the US fish and wildlife people out to look to see if they would like to do a wet lands restoration project on the site I just described. Has anyone in the forum ever worked with them and do you have any pictures of ponds they did? my goal is to be able to dog train in the spring and duck hunt in the fall. I do not plan on having fish even though bass will live anyplace. But I reall ydo not have the money to the project myself but would really like to see a big impond of water back there. thank you michelle

USF&W scare the heck out of me! I'm sure others have positive experiances with the USF&W, but I would contact the NRCS first to find out about any monies/programs available. Also, the NRCS will take core samples to let you know if a pond can even be built on the site. No strings or charges attached for this service. If the USF&W declare part of your property a "Wetland", they pretty much own the land then and can even prevent you from setting foot on it.
BTW, Very happy you found this site. I hope you enjoy the banter and find tons of useful info plus share your knowledge!

I would not contact any gov agency if you value the freedom to use and develop your property without stringent restrictions. If you need help contact DU first or consider a hunting club to raise $. First talk to a natural resources attorney.

Ewest and Rainman are right. If you contact any Guv Agency, there is a chance that your own usage could become limited without them helping with positive changes.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
