Ewest has collected a list of other web sites that provide information for identifying various unknown plants and animals including several for helping with fish identifications. New ones will be added when they are located.
We often ask questions about or need quick info including pictures on a type of fish. Here is the tool or process.
Save the first link -- Fishbase
http://www.fishbase.org/search.php?lang=English Go there and type in type of fish -- ex. Bluegill and hit search ,when the list comes up click on species name.
When the BG page loads notice all the info but scroll down the page and look at all the topics under More Info -- like spawning , diet, growth, predators , pictures and more. Click on one of those and get more info on that topic.
Even more important is the feature that allows, for example ,you to click on pictrues which will give you a google search of BG pictures. You can do the same on several data bases listed at the bottom under Internet Sources and up will pop BG source info on the web.
The FishBase site is adding new data and sources and references often and is a great tool.
Time to add more sources of information to the list. For most general questions I start my online search for answers if I can't fine an answer here

North American Native Fishes Associationhttp://www.nanfa.org/ac.shtmlhttp://forum.nanfa.org/Checklist of Freshwater Fishes of North America, Including Subspecies and Undescribed Forms
http://www.nanfa.org/checklist.shtml"American Currents provides a readily accessible venue for important information on native fishes that otherwise would go unpublished. The journal is available to scientists and non-scientists who have bits of information that are not suitable for peer-reviewed journals but that are relevant to our understanding of species ecology and behavior and, ultimately, to the conservation of our natural heritage."
