Along with the many improvements in my pond I have also been able to increase the spotted gar population (con).

Other than shooting them, which I, do does anyone have any other suggestions catching them?

You can catch them on topwater lures, with the hooks removed, and replaced with about 3-4" of frayed nylon twine. It will tangle in their teeth. Works well, when they're biting.

Tex,

I did a quick search on Yahoo and came up with these helpful websites:

Tex,

Sorry, I can't offer any suggestions. Shooting is probably the most efficeient way to control them.

Some of the locals use a tangle of monofiliment line and live bait on a rod and reel. The bird's nest of monofiliment ensnares their teeth, and works much better than a hook, so I am told.

Put up a sign saying "No Fishing For Delicious-For-BBQ Gar Fish". Maybe that would work. \:\)

All seriousness aside, how did you get the gar infestation?

Texas715,

poland_jack nailed it, based on my experience. Its a hit or miss deal to catch one of these prehistoric creatures.

A small torpedo shaped bream cork with small hooks embedded should work. Gars used to give me fits when I was young, attacking my bobber. \:\)

There were some when I bought the place. I guess their increased population is a tribute to measures I have taken to increase the LMB fishing.

Thanks for the links. I will try some of them tonight if things work out.
