Hello.

With the temperature I can't wait to see if there will be a spawning record this year, since I kept a record the fastest spawning of Yellow perch was April 1,2012 , water temp 51f.

Here on February 25 the Maple are already tapped, currently it is 16c.

Our ice has been gone for almost 4 weeks now, we had 73°F air temp yesterday and spring peepers were making noise after the sun went down; today right now it's 26°F, windchill is 15°F and the ground is covered in snow.

Hello.

The ice has never been very thick this winter, it should melt quickly.

Question, for the spawning of fish the length of the day has little importance if the water temperature is good?

And if the water temperature triggers spawning earlier, will the eggs be sufficiently developed?

We have had the ice gone for a while and some 70 plus degree days already, a setback to 22 degrees this morning but that is supposed to only last a day, back to the 70s by this weekend.
Normally we would have had the spring peepers screaming their heads off with that kind of warmth, we have a little water hole pond close to my house and I love to listen to them, one of the first really good signs of spring, but this year I have not heard a single one yet, am really curious why that is, do they know something we don't, usually nature has a way of protecting its own.

All the really good ideas I've ever had came to me while I was milking a cow.

Photoperiod also matters.

When producers stimulate spawning of YP in tanks, they simulate the fall and winter season water temperatures for proper gonadal development. They also increase the hours of "daylight" when they warm the water temperatures to mimic the spring season for the fish.

I have read a study that YP in captivity will still spawn when the water temperature is "correct" but the photoperiod in "incorrect". But it effects the length of the spawning and hurts the results when both factors are not in synch.

YP will even spawn (poorly) if the water temperature is artificially constrained from reaching the correct temperature.

Life will find a way!

I'm looking forward to the spawn here too.
Small fish and minnows just showed up along edges yesterday afternoon.
