The ponds in my area of north Texas all have large areas of algae growing along the shore line. I assume this is filamentous blue green algae. What is causing this sudden bloom and what is the best way to control it? Will grass carp or talapia eat this stuff?

Texas Parks and Wildlife says that Grass Carp is not waht you want for algae but Tilapia will do an excellent job. They are available at 800/333-9154 in Texas

There are a number of tilapia suppliers in Texas but I support advertisers in Pond Boss magazine and sponsors of this forum.

Check the Pond Boss Resource Guide at
http://www.pondboss.com/resourceguide_fisheries_consulting_services.html
and advertisers in current issue of Pond Boss magazine.

Email me if additional information required.

The only time I have ever saw grass carp after we released them was I saw one eating green colored algae growing on a limb in the pond. In my opinion, grass carp will help control some, not all algae in a pond.

turkeyfootnc,

A guy could grow old watching and waiting for grass carp to clean up an algae problem....they may take a bite now and then, but overall they are just not a factor.
