I just purchased 9 acres of land in north Louisiana. The propery is rectangler and mostly wooded.I have an old homesite on the property that has a water well. The land is relatively flat but, it slowly tapers down toward a beaver pond that is about 300ft from my propery line in the back. I also have a natural spring that runs about 100 ft from my propery line. I would like to put in a two acre pond but, I'm not sure where to start. Can someone point me in the right directon on how to get started. I also heard that the state would come out and help with soil sampling and cost.

Look around and talk to other land owners about their ponds. Talk to local gov't about regulations, public assistance, etc. Ask a whole bunch of questions. Soils are a big issue. The spring is a neat deal but if you hit one during excavation, you might have a problem concerning completion or a spring draining your pond during dry times.

Thanks for the advice. I was wondering if anyone has had any problems with beavers destroying their dams. Where I intend to construct my dam, their is a beaver pond about 50 yards away. Is their anything that can be done to deter them.

Yes, beavers will tunnel into a dam. I would "deter" them before I provided a new den site.
