I have seen many swarms of bullhead fry along the shore of my pond. It was stocked with bluegill and channel cats last fall and bass this spring. I've been feeding by hand since April and the first thing to eat the feed was channels later I noticed the bluegill feeding. Most of the cats I have seen were 1/2-3/4 pound. Now I am seeing a lot of smaller cats feeding and they tend to stay in groups. I can't tell if they are channels or maybe bullheads.
My question, has anyone ever observed bullheads eating floating feed? I thought mudcats stayed on the bottom, but it is scary to think that I might be feeding a problem.
Replies will be appreciated.

Where my lake overflows into the creek there is a 8 ft. deep hole with every kind of fish that the creek has including bullheads. Last year I started feeding those fish daily just to see how long it would take to train them. I couldn't believe how many bullheads that were in that small hole. They feed just as aggressive as the channel cats in my lake.

Catch one right away and identify it. There is a thread on here somewhere with a good picture of a bullhead fry. I beleive it was under "my catfish spawned" but I can't be sure. I remember the notch in the tail is an easy way to tell.

I only know this because I have been reading everything related to bullheads for the last year as I try to remove them. Last year we saw some swarms for the first time and in the first year they made the water so muddy we couldn't see anything. I scooped out as many as I could but they don't stay in the swarms for long so time is of the essence. I have caught 339 of them this year and the water is starting to clear. I wish I would have scooped out more, but then again I can't imagine the mess I would have if I hadn't netted out any.
