I have native, coppernose, and redear bream in my pond. Can anyone tell me if they will crossbreed?

They are capable of crossbreeding...but this generally happens when nests are crowded and water visibility is limited. They mate by distinguishing the ear flaps, and in muddy water mistaken identities may occur.

Crossbreeding also happens in very clear water as well. My pumpkinseed and bluegill cross and make a very interesting colored fish. They will make their nests together in the same area of the lake. My lake is all sand and gravel so they make their nest according to water depth from 18" to 3'. The LMB in a little deeper water away from the forage fish. FYI

Rowly,

Any of your pumpkinseed X bluegill get quite large? There is some research in Canada that shows some really large males of this first generation cross. I am doing one (taxidermist) right now that is 1 lb. 6 oz. and would be a world record if we could verify it.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Cecil, yes in deed. To date I have some 6-8 inch plus size crosses with no feeding of pellets over the last 4 years since established. Some are more distinctive to the bluegill, thinking they are from the female bluegill egg and male pumpkinseed sperm. On the other side, I have a very colorful more pumpkinseed type fish with some bluegill characteristics that I think are the female pumpkinseed egg and male BG sperm. Do you think I'm on the right track. I originally bought some 600 adult Bg from a dealer that he said he got in northern Ontario that were very big and dark skinned, added with the same # of Bg I caught around here. The pumpkinseed are all local fish but not nearly as interesting as their cross. I was trying to establish a good gene pool for the future of the lake. I also bought and caught the LMB with the same thought process. When I bought and caught 100 adults LMB from a group of ponds from the Toronto Bass Club I also added a few of their pumpkinseeds but in this body of water the fish were a bright red color with some orange and yellow with all the markings of a pumpkinseed but were stunningly beautiful. Redear sun fish wouldn't live and thrive here would they???
