The type and amount of cover will depend on your goals for the pond and what you are trying to accomplish by using artificial cover. Aquatic weeds and algae mats are a form of cover. There are two main types of cover: 1. fish attractors, 2. refuge area to protect small fish and allow natural fish foods to develop. Refuge areas involve lots of or extensive amounts of dense cover as in 20% -30% of the pond shoreline.
From your description above you have basically installed fish attractors.
