I have my feeder set so it throws feed over a 3'-5' deep shelf, and then it will almost immediately float over a 10' deep area. The smaller fish feed in the shallower area and the bigger fish come to the surface in the deeper water.
I haven't moved the feeder location in 9 years. Fish on beds will ignore the food.
