So as appears to be a common problem here, my dam outflow pipe has rusted and now I am in need of a renovation.
I have about a 3-4 acre lake that is mature and about 50 years old. The corrugated steel overflow pipe has been repaired twice with cement collars and now has broken near the junction of the vertical and horizontal pipe. I can't afford to replace the corrugated pipe and am hoping to convert to a suction outflow system as well as seal off the old pipe. The current overflow pipe has a 24" diameter.
The lake is fed by several springs and does have a large area that it drains. It has not overflowed the dam in the 3 years I have been there.
I feel a suction outflow system would benefit the health of the lake since the lake does get a little stagnant in the summer heat.
I am in Virginia near Richmond.
So my questions are: who/where do you get the supplied needed to make the drain? Do you need a building permit? Will a single suction drain provide enough drainage to handle storm flow?
Thanks and any ideas would be appreciated! Tim

I'd check with Solitude Lake Management. They are in your area.

The pipe can be sourced from a contractors supply place. Look at siphon drains here and on the internet. That can give you ideas for design.

As for permits, I would talk to your counties NRCS office and ask them. I would say I doubt any are needed, but each state is different.

That is a great link snrub. Looking for a way to water cattle from a pond I plan to fence off so water quality can improve. With one very minor adjustment that siphon system will work and can dead-end in a water tank at the bottom of the dam with a shut-off float valve. You solved my problem! thanks. BM61.

I don't know how they plumb them but in my area I have seen concrete cattle waterers that sit below the dam of the pond to supply water for the cattle while having the pond fenced entirely off from access by the cattle.
