"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

Thanks Tony.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Nice articles sprkplug. I forwarded the links to a few people that fish my pond.

Thanks.

Good stuff Tony. One message that comes across to me is maybe it's best to layoff fishing the BG when they're on the nest and maybe a moving max harvest size would work best for preserving the best genetics.

By "moving max harvest size" I mean something like if the best BG in your pond are 8 inch, then harvest maybe 6 inch or smaller. When you best BG get to be 10 inch then move the harvest size to say 8. I started using this approach last year in my new little pond with a "7 or bigger goes back" limit. So we culled a few fish in the 6 to 7 range for the table. Not saying this is correct, just something I'm trying....

In part 1, the first pic seems to be of slightly stunted BG, in the last pic, (it looks to me) to be a hybrid, not a pure strain BG.

Good articles Tony!

Two very interesting articles about bluegill populations. Thanks for taking the time to find them and offer links to them.

The gar article is good too! It expresses my sentiments exactly.

About as ready as I can be. Nervous, but excited. Some good news, got a letter telling me I have gotten a raise, effective Monday. Haven't had a raise in over 14 years, let alone one before I even started the job.

Good for you Tony!

There are definitely advantages of being employee vs. a sole proprietorship. I've thought about it myself at times.

I was re-reading an article in the Sept/Oct PBM by Bob L. this morning and found this excerpt that makes me feel a little more confident about my harvest strategy.

Bob states: "Here's a big secret to bluegills. Don't ever harvest the biggest ones. Take the next size down. The biggest ones defend the beds, keeping most of the younger fish at bay. If a bluegill can't spawn, its energy stays focused on growth."

It is especially important up north to not harvest the biggest BG males because of the time it takes for them to get that big. In the south it is still not a good idea to harvest the biggest male BG but not as critical as up north. BG grow slower and live longer up north as a general rule.
